Japan In View 2024

Japan in View | 29 October 2024, Tuesday

9.00am – 6pm JST | Tokyo

Generating US$32B in revenue in 2023 according to Media Partners Asia, the Japanese video eco-system is formidable and second only to China. What does the future hold for Japan’s linear pay TV which has been a stable industry stalwart for decades? How are local streaming players competing with international players, where less than half of the households have at least one subscription video service? And will there be more consolidation in a market where collaboration, whether between local and local as well as local and international players, is not uncommon?

While many things Japanese have tremendous appeal globally, J-entertainment has arguably not had the same impact nor found the same global appeal as K-content. Will 2024 mark the start of a content boom in Japan and its resurgence internationally?

What are the latest developments in live-action scripted entertainment? How does one successfully navigate Japan’s unique content industry practices, from talent agencies to the strong IP control by manga creators? Will international audiences see more of the reality and variety shows that dominate primetime linear programming domestically, and will anime breakthrough into mainstream entertainment at scale?

In 2024, can Japan rediscover its energy and innovative spirit that enabled it once to be the dominant regional creative and commercial leader, back in the ‘70s and ‘80s?

Key Sessions:

  • On the Precipice of a Content Boom
  • The Anime Renaissance
  • The Growth of Streaming and the State of Linear TV
