VIDIO SECURES PATENT FOR AI-POWERED AD REPLACEMENT TECHNOLOGY IN LIVE TV STREAMING

Vidio, Indonesia’s leading over-the-top (OTT) streaming platform, has made a major breakthrough in digital advertising innovation by securing a utility patent from the Ministry of Law and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia. The patent, officially granted on March 20, 2025, is for a proprietary technology titled “Method for Replacing Ads in Live TV Streaming” — making Vidio the first OTT platform in the country to hold a patent for AI-based ad replacement in live television broadcasts.

The patented technology is the brainchild of Nurhadi, a machine learning engineer at Vidio, who has been developing the system since 2019. Using advanced AI, the system detects ad breaks in real time and dynamically replaces them with more relevant and personalized digital ads — without disrupting the live broadcast experience.

“One of the biggest challenges we faced was how to deliver Vidio ads during live TV streams. I developed a machine learning system that detects visual transitions in real time using AI,” explained Nurhadi, Senior Machine Learning Engineer at Vidio.

“With this AI-powered technology, we’re able to serve digital ads that are tailored to each viewer — enhancing relevance while maintaining a smooth viewing experience. It’s not only technically efficient, but it also unlocks new revenue opportunities for both Vidio and our advertising partners,” added Haswar Hafid, Deputy Director of Digital and Emerging Media at Emtek Media.

According to The Future of TV is With OTT report by The Trade Desk and Milieu Insight, cited by Marketeers Max, 84% of marketers in Indonesia believe ads on OTT platforms are more effective in capturing audience attention than those on traditional TV. OTT has become the fastest-growing media channel in the country, with the market projected to reach US$1.2 billion (IDR 18.9 trillion) by 2023 — prompting more brands to shift their digital ad budgets to streaming platforms like Vidio.
