OTT video streaming is growing exponentially in Thailand. Some of the world’s biggest and most established streaming platforms are working hard to cement their position in the country. How are local streamers differentiating their services to compete with international ones and vice versa? What would it take to grow the local subscription ecosystem overall?
On the other hand, according to GlobalData, the pay TV service revenue in Thailand is expected to grow from $734 million in 2021 to $1.1 billion in 2026, supported by growing DTH, cable TV and IPTV subscriptions. IPTV subscriptions will surpass DTH subscriptions in 2023 and will go on to account for 56% share of the total pay TV subscriptions by the end of 2026. This growth will be driven by the rising adoption of multi-play packages with integrated IPTV services, and the promotion of fixed broadband bundles with access to IPTV services.
Thailand in View 2023 will explore the challenges being faced by local, regional and global streaming services, and what their priorities are around content, growth and ultimately, business models, for the coming year. Will the growing consumption of streaming services undermine the pay TV business? Or will both services be able to grow alongside and not at the expense of each other?
