Media Partners Asia has projected the APAC online video sector to grow at 6.7% CAGR to reach US$78.5 billion in value by 2028, with Korea accounting for US$14 billion. As one of the biggest scaled markets in the region, Korea has an outsized influence on the region due to the tremendous popularity of K-content and K-Pop. Will it continue to be the leading Asian content driver, or will the high cost of K-content help fuel the rise of other Asian content eager to usurp its throne?
It is however a market not without its own challenges, from significant downside risks on TV advertising to once dominant free-to-air players striving to reinvent themselves while local streamers explore opportunities on how to effectively compete with international streamers who are pouring millions of dollars every year into K-content.
