Agnes Rozario
Director of Content
ASTRO

Malaysia in View is less than two months away and we are presenting you with a series of short interviews with the speakers of this conference. This past week, AVIA had the pleasure to sit down with the Agnes Rozario, Director, Content for Astro, to hear her views about the video industry and Astro’s content strategy moving forward.

  • Agnes: Creating our own local and vernacular content has been a right move for us in staying relevant to our diverse audiences. Local content remains increasingly important in creating both stickiness and greater opportunity to monetise.  Our premium IPs like Polis Evo, Hantu Kak Limah have also travelled in the region.

  • Agnes: We’ve always a been a content creator in addition to being an aggregator and now we have moved beyond aggregation to exclusive partnerships with global players, for a differentiated experience for customers. We’ve partnered exclusively with HBO Asia for HBO GO and with iQIYI, where Astro has exclusive rights to deliver its content.

  • Agnes: We are constantly looking at new ideas and IPs to be developed to win audiences. One of our latest original IPs, Tanya Dr Imelda, a show hosted by local celebrity, Lisa Surihani and who poses questions from our viewers to OB-GYN Dr Imelda has garnered a major following amongst the target group of women on both TV and digital. We continue to produce hit dramas with our latest, Curi-Curi Cinta being the drama with the highest viewership on TV in 2019. Customers can look forward to a new Astro experience including a new unified interface across all devices; personalised recommendations to view 50,000 on demand titles; 4K-Ultra HD and cloud recording.

  • Agnes: Piracy is the biggest threat to the Malaysian entertainment and media industry. Digital piracy has resulted in streaming of pirated content through TV boxes and apps. Piracy is so common, many seem to have forgotten it’s theft which results in massive losses to the local economy and jobs.

  • Agnes: I am a content junkie – and now watching more Asian and local content than ever, especially Malaysian movies.  I am hooked on movies on Citra, Celestial and TVN Asia which I watch on demand and excited about celebrating Malaysian films this Merdeka from Ola Bola to Polis Evo, Paskal and The Journey.  Also not to be missed are our releases in the near future with Sangkar, in August and our film adaptation of the award winning novel, The Gardens Of Evening Mist, later on.

Emily Wee
CEO
TM Net

In anticipation of the upcoming Malaysia in View conference, we had a quick chat with Emily Wee, CEO of TM Net. Over the past 12 years, she has held various roles in Telekom Malaysia, focusing on music, IPTV and online video streaming. In this interview, we learn more about her new role as CEO, plans for unifi TV and her personal perspective on the current trends in the video industry.

  • Emily: I am the head of unifi TV which is the IPTV service from Telekom Malaysia which we launched in 2010 together with our unifi high speed broadband service. Later in 2013 we expanded unifi TV into a multiscreen proposition with unifi Play TV covering mobile phones, tablets and PCs. What’s been really exciting for me are two things. Firstly, the rate of technological change in the IP video streaming space means that we are able to continuously improve our customer experience with features like 4K, personalized recommendation and voice command.

Secondly, we are forging ahead with our original productions. We have four locally produced channels and we have been seeing very good traction on the platform for them. It has given us fresh impetus to experiment with storylines and formats to better cater to our audience.

  • Emily: There are definitely a lot more entertainment options for consumers today compared to when we first launched. Online video streaming platforms such as Netflix and YouTube now attract a sizable chunk of the online video traffic. However, for certain genres namely movies, sports, news and vernacular content, linear viewing remains highly relevant. We see the percentage of On Demand viewing on our platform steadily increasing driven by catch-up. In terms of devices, for unifi TV, most of the viewing still happens in front of TV sets in the home.

  • Emily: Yes definitely. It’s more efficient in terms of time to market for launching channels and it allows us to seamlessly offer our own on-demand and OTT offering. In terms of user data, IP provides us the ability to have a granular view of our audience behavior – what they watch, when they watch it and what devices they are using to access this content.

  • Emily: Firstly, online piracy has had a massive impact on the industry by enabling widespread content theft. I fully support a tougher stance by the authorities to combat the problem. Secondly, I would like to see more collaborations between local operators and broadcasters in the face of increasing competition from global players.

  • Emily: I’m a huge fan of British TV shows, particularly dramas and crime shows. The BBC channels on unifi TV as well as the BBC Player app are my usual go-to places to access these programmes. I’m also a news junkie and these channels are always on in my home by default.
